Review of A HOME FOR BESSIE – by Jennifer Aicher

This is a touching story told through the eyes of a little girl, named Gabby, going through the foster care system.  This story actually made me tear up – it is so beautifully told!  In this book, illustrated with real photographs as well as drawings, we follow a little girl and her doll, Bessie, while she goes from place to place hoping to find her forever home.  During this time, Gabby makes homes from materials around her for Bessie.  Often Bessie and Bessie’s homes are taken away from her, but Gabby never gives up and makes new Bessies and new homes for Bessie.  We feel her fear, sadness and despair throughout this journey, as well as her surprise and happiness when she finally ends up with a kind and caring woman who wants to adopt her!  I was cheering and crying at the end of this story!  I think you will be, too!

This is a wonderful way to explain what the foster system is and how it works to children.  Those children who are lucky enough to live in loving homes will empathize with Gabby and hopefully see how fortunate they are. For those who are already in the foster system, they will see themselves in this story and perhaps this story will bring them some hope that they, too, will someday find their forever homes.  Kudos to Author, Jennifer Aicher, for sharing this heartwarming story with the world!
